Troop 1997 is a youth-led Scouts BSA troop formed in 2004 and originally chartered by Gary Memorial United Methodist Church. Today, the troop is proudly chartered by Mt Hebron Presbyterian Church, where we meet weekly on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 9:00 PM during the HCPSS year.
Our troop has an active membership of around 40 Scouts spanning all experience levels, from new Scouts just starting their journey to experienced Life and Eagle Scouts. Troop 1997 offers a supportive environment where Scouts build leadership skills, learn outdoor skills, earn merit badges, and form lasting friendships.
The troop is supported by a dedicated group of adult volunteers, including many in-troop merit badge counselors who help Scouts explore a wide variety of interests and advance at their own pace.
Camping trips are planned about once a month with varying activity levels. In past years we have enjoyed a wide variety of activities on those trips, including: bicycling through some of the local battlefields and along the C & O canal, rock climbing, caving, canoeing/kayaking, whitewater rafting, rifle/shotgun shooting, backpacking along the Appalacian Trail, skiing, and winter cabin camping.
